At the end of a session in Machakos County, while most of the group queued for the simulator, one student stayed behind at the diagram board.
She had a question that nobody had asked us before. How does the pilot's switch know which light to turn on?
The question behind the question
Our volunteer that day was a licensed B2 avionics engineer. He did not simplify. He explained data buses, redundancy, and the fact that a modern airliner carries hundreds of kilometres of wiring that somebody has to be able to trace when an intermittent fault appears at 03:00.
She listened to all of it and then asked what qualifications that required.
What she had assumed
She had assumed aviation meant flying, and she had ruled it out — not on ability, but because she had no interest in being a pilot and did not know there was anything else.
Nobody had told her that the person who understands the aircraft's nervous system holds a licence, signs for the work, and is in global shortage.
Where she is now
She sat her KCSE with a B in Physics and a B- in Mathematics. She is eighteen months into a diploma in Aeronautical Engineering, specialising in avionics, and she writes to us occasionally with questions we have to forward to engineers because they have outgrown us.
Why we tell this story
Not because it is typical. It is not — most students do not write back, and we do not pretend to know where the majority end up.
We tell it because it is precise about the mechanism. Nobody persuaded her to like electronics; she already did. What changed was one piece of information: this interest has a licensed profession attached to it.
That is the whole intervention. Not motivation. Information.
Most of the students we meet already have an interest that maps onto an aviation career. They are simply missing the sentence that connects the two.
