When we tell students that flying drones is a licensed aviation career, the reaction is scepticism. They own a drone, or their cousin does. It does not feel like aviation.
Then we explain what the KCAA requires and the room shifts.
Regulation is the opportunity
Kenya requires a Remote Pilot Licence, operator certification, and specific authorisation for many categories of flight. Training is formal. There is an examination. Airspace rules apply.
Students initially hear this as an obstacle. It is the opposite. Regulation is precisely what separates a licensed professional from someone with a hobby drone, and it is why the work pays.
Where the money actually is
Not in flying. Flying is the easy part and gets cheaper every year.
The value is in what comes off the aircraft. An orthomosaic map of a construction site. A volumetric calculation of a quarry stockpile. NDVI crop health analysis across a farm. A thermal inspection report on a solar installation.
Clients do not want footage. They want a number they can make a decision with.
What we tell students to do
Get the licence — it is weeks, not years, and among the cheapest regulated aviation qualifications available anywhere.
Then learn the data side. Photogrammetry, GIS, basic Python. That combination is genuinely scarce in Kenya right now, and it is what turns a remote pilot into a business.
The honest framing
This is not a shortcut to the flight deck, and we never present it that way. It is a different career with its own ceiling.
But for a student who wants to be in aviation, who wants to hold a real licence, and who cannot see a route past the cost of commercial pilot training — it is the closest door, and it is open.
